The following are the 18 cardinal vowels recorded by Daniel Jones.  Please listen to them.  You and a friend can practice identifying them while you play them randomly for one other.  I suggest writing down the symbols for each number while you practice.

The digitized sound files in this stack originate from "78" gramophone recordings that were produced in 1943 by the Linguaphone Institute, 207-209, Regent Street, London, W.1. & 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York (DAJ0 1D & DAJ0 2G).  Those reocrdings are no longer pressed. Sound resolution is 8 bit and the digitization was prepared by Doug Honorof (Yale University and Haskins Labs) with thanks to Leigh Lisker, Arthur Abramson, Iris Smordinsky, and Louis Goldstein.
