“Makes No Difference To The Plot”, study reveals

A study of the language used in almost 1,000 film scripts has shed light again on the chasm that exists between the ways that male and female characters are portrayed onscreen.

If womens’ roles are removed from a plot, it often makes no difference to the story, according to the report in The Times. The research – which used automated tools for linguistic analysis and was conducted by USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Signal Analysis and Interpretation Lab (SAIL) – also showed that female characters tend to be around five years younger than their male counterparts.
